Karnataka Tourism Department Wins Award for Excellence at ITB, Berlin 2016
State awarded Best Heritage Tourism and Minister R.V. Deshpande received Best Innovative Tourism Minister
The state’s Department of Tourism has been conferred two Pacific Area Travel Writers Association awards at ITB, Berlin 2016. The Department has received Best Heritage Tourism and Minister for Tourism R.V. Deshpande has received the Best Innovative Tourism Minister award.
ITB Berlin 2016 is a leading trade show event and Karnataka is participating to promote the state as a favourable tourist destination. Karnataka boasts of two UNESCO World Heritage sites at Hampi and Pattadakal among many other monuments and structures of archaeological and historic significance. The Tourism Department has been making all out efforts to ensure well rounded development of tourism in the state.
More interest has been drawn to tourism following the City hosting Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) conference in September of last year. About 55 countries who participated in that conference attended the Invest Karnataka 2016 meet held in February to consolidate what was decided during PATA event. About 29 MoUs related to tourism were signed during the three days of Invest Karnataka.
The government has been promoting development of theme parks, cruises, cable cars at four locations, heli-tourism, development of arts and crafts, and air charter services. The Department is also trying to lure investors to invest in the development of cities like Vijayapura, which is the home of Gol Gumbaz and infrastructure around dams such as Almatti, Malaprabha, Bhadra, Gorur and Hidkal.
The Tourism Department is also working with the Forest Department to set up hiking trails along Uttara Karnataka coastline and has also tried to improve the safety of travellers with the establishment of Tourism Mitra force.
